How Much Marijuana Can You Buy in Michigan?
Michigan marijuana purchase limits are determined by the Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency. How much cannabis you’re able to buy in Michigan depends on whether you are a medical patient or adult-use consumer. However, when it comes to purchase and possession, whether you’re medicating or just having fun: 2.5 ounces (oz) is the magic number.
Medical consumers are able to purchase up to 2.5 oz of cannabis per day, while recreational consumers are able to purchase up to 2.5 oz of cannabis per transaction.
Overall, there exist some important distinctions between Michigan’s recreational and medical cannabis purchase limits.
Michigan Recreational Purchase Limits
Adults aged 21 and older are allowed to purchase up to 2.5 oz of cannabis or its equivalent in cannabis-infused products during a single dispensary transaction. Within the total transaction, recreational consumers can purchase up to 15 grams of concentrates.

Depending on the dispensary you visit, you can find a variety of cannabis products, including dried flower, pre-rolls, oils, edibles, tinctures, topicals, transdermals, vapes… the list goes on! Once purchased, adults are allowed to keep up to 10 oz of cannabis privately at home, but anything over 2.5 oz must be securely stored.
Adult-use consumers can possess up to 2.5 oz of cannabis in public, up to 15 grams of which can be cannabis concentrates, at any given time, in public or private. Additionally, adults can grow and keep up to 12 plants at home, securely stored and out of public sight, in addition to what they can buy from the dispensary.
Michigan Medical Marijuana Purchase Allowances
Similarly, medical marijuana patients in Michigan are allowed to purchase up to 2.5 oz of usable cannabis or its equivalent in cannabis-infused products per day. However, Michigan medical patients cannot purchase more than 10 oz per month.
Medical patients can also possess up to 2.5 oz of cannabis and cannabis products. Under state law, medical marijuana patients and primary caregivers are allowed to possess up to:
- 16 oz of solid cannabis-infused products
- 7 grams of gaseous cannabis-infused products
- 36 fl oz of liquid cannabis-infused products
Medical marijuana patients in Michigan are also allowed to grow and keep up to 12 plants at home in addition to what they purchase. However, the plants must be stored securely and kept out of public sight.
Just like adult-use dispensaries in Michigan, medical marijuana dispensaries require a valid medical card in addition to photo ID.
Michigan Recreational Purchase Limits for Out-of-State Visitors

Typically, thanks to medical reciprocity agreements, medical marijuana patients from other states can legally purchase cannabis when traveling in Michigan. Michigan can and does honor out-of-state medical cards. However, not every dispensary chooses to recognize them. According to state law, it’s ultimately up to the dispensary to decide. Keep in mind that nonresident medical marijuana patients must adhere to their home state’s purchase limits when visiting a Michigan dispensary.
Since adult-use cannabis is also legal in the state, medical cardholders are still able to shop at recreational dispensaries in addition to medical dispensaries.

So, whether you’re a Michigander or not, it’s not advisable to transport cannabis across state borders, including leaving Michigan with it. Always err on the side of caution to avoid any unwanted run-ins with the law.
