Everything Michigan Residents Need To Know About Cannabis Edibles

Cannabis edibles come in many different varieties. From classic brownies and cookies to new edible gummies and candies, there are many options for today’s edible consumer. In addition to traditional edibles, dispensary shoppers can also take advantage of cannabis capsules to enjoy the same buzz in a smaller, simpler, more discreet form. How can you know if edibles or capsules are right for you? Here’s everything you need to know about cannabis edibles.

Why Choose Edible Cannabis?

There are several advantages to choosing cannabis edibles over smoking or vaping.

For starters, edibles are a smoke-free and vapor-free option that allow health-conscious cannabis consumers to enjoy everything that cannabis has to offer, without risking damage to their lungs.

Furthermore, the effects produced by edibles can last much longer than those produced by other consumption methods. For example, while smoking or vaping may produce a buzz that typically lasts for 2-3 hours, edibles usually produce a buzz that lasts from 5-8 hours. However, it’s worth noting that they can also take a lot longer to begin working in the first place, sometimes taking up to 1-2 hours to kick in, depending on stomach contents.

Additionally, edibles are a super discreet way of using cannabis. They can be quickly unpackaged and eaten and most will not give off any smell. Moreover, they’re super easy to carry around and make for a great mobile-dosing option. If you want to ingest cannabis while avoiding that skunky smell that often alerts others to what you’re doing, edibles can be a great alternative to smoking or vaping cannabis.

Edibles are also a great choice for the precise dosing of cannabinoids. When you smoke or vape cannabis, it’s practically impossible to know exactly how much THC or CBD you are consuming. But since edibles are precisely dosed by the manufacturer, you’ll know exactly how much you’re ingesting because it’s written on the package.

How Do Edibles Work?

After a piece of edible cannabis is ingested, it gets processed through the stomach. After being absorbed, the contents of the edible are then processed by the liver before making their way into the bloodstream. It’s been claimed that edibles are more potent than smoking or vaping because when THC is digested by the liver, it gets metabolized into something called 11-hydroxy-THC–a more potent form of THC.

As the edible is slowly digested over time, it begins to produce effects. This is one of the reasons why the edible high tends to last for so much longer. When you smoke or vape cannabis, the cannabinoids enter your bloodstream very quickly through your lungs. However, the slow digestion process means that when you eat an edible, THC will be released into your bloodstream at a longer more sustained pace.

The contents of your stomach and what you’ve eaten recently can also affect how an edible works. For example, when taken on an empty stomach, it can take a bit longer for effects to kick in since the digestive process needs to start up from scratch. When taken on too full of a stomach you may have the same problem because there’s so much other food to digest simultaneously.

How Are Edibles Made?

Edibles are made by infusing some form of cannabis into an edible food, or by placing it into a gelatin capsule. In order for edibles to work, the THC they contain must go through a process called decarboxylation. This process uses heat to convert THC into THCA, which is the cannabinoid responsible for the intoxication typically associated with cannabis. The heated oil or plant material can then be infused into the edible recipe or directly into the capsule to produce the final edible product.

Dosing Cannabis Edibles

Because the edible high can last so long and sometimes feel so intense, it’s important to be careful when it comes to dosing. The best rule of thumb when it comes to edibles–especially for beginners–is to start low and go slow. Because an edible trip can be really long, taking too much means that you are strapped in for a long ride. Remember, it’s always best to take too little rather than too much because you can always just take more later if necessary.
